AI Ethics & Procedure
AI Ethics & Procedure
Jurnal Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini (JUPAUD)
Policy on the responsible, transparent, and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence and AI-assisted technologies in scholarly publishing.
AI Ethics Policy
JUPAUD recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies can support authors, editors, reviewers, and other participants in scholarly publishing. However, the use of AI must not compromise research integrity, transparency, originality, authorship, confidentiality, intellectual property, or the accuracy of the scholarly record.
Human authors remain fully responsible for the content, originality, accuracy, integrity, and ethical compliance of their manuscripts. AI systems cannot be listed as authors or contributors because they cannot assume responsibility for the submitted work.
1. Permitted Use of AI
Authors may use AI-assisted tools for limited and responsible purposes, such as:
- language improvement, grammar, spelling, and readability;
- translation or language assistance;
- formatting or organization of text;
- assistance with brainstorming or developing research ideas;
- assistance with coding or computational tasks, provided that the resulting work is verified by the authors; and
- other administrative or technical assistance that does not replace scholarly judgment.
Authors remain responsible for checking and validating all AI-assisted output before submission.
2. AI Use in Research and Manuscript Preparation
AI-assisted technologies must not be used in a manner that introduces fabricated data, fabricated references, misleading statements, manipulated evidence, or unsupported conclusions.
Authors must independently verify factual claims, references, quotations, statistical results, research interpretations, and other substantive information generated or assisted by AI.
AI-generated material must not be presented as original human scholarship when doing so would misrepresent the nature or contribution of the work.
3. Disclosure by Authors
Authors should disclose the use of AI or AI-assisted technologies when such use materially contributed to the development of the manuscript.
The disclosure should identify, where applicable:
- the AI tool or system used;
- the purpose for which it was used;
- the part of the manuscript or research process affected; and
- the extent to which human authors reviewed, verified, and revised the output.
"The authors used an AI-assisted tool for language editing and readability improvement. All AI-assisted output was reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors, who remain fully responsible for the final content of the manuscript."
4. AI and Authorship
AI tools, including generative AI systems, cannot be listed as authors of manuscripts submitted to JUPAUD.
Authorship requires human accountability for the research and publication. Human authors must satisfy the journal's authorship requirements and accept responsibility for the submitted and published work.
5. Prohibited or Unethical Uses
AI must not be used to facilitate or conceal publication misconduct. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- fabricating or falsifying research data;
- creating fictitious references or citations;
- misrepresenting AI-generated text as independently verified scholarship;
- generating false research results, images, tables, or experimental evidence;
- manipulating peer-review or editorial processes;
- impersonating authors, reviewers, editors, or research participants;
- disclosing confidential manuscript or peer-review information to unauthorized AI systems; and
- using AI to conceal plagiarism, duplicate publication, or other forms of research misconduct.
6. Confidentiality and Privacy
Authors, reviewers, and editors must exercise caution when entering unpublished manuscripts, personal information, confidential research data, reviewer reports, editorial correspondence, or other restricted information into external AI systems.
Confidential manuscript and peer-review information must be protected in accordance with applicable privacy, confidentiality, and journal policies.
7. AI Use by Reviewers
Reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of manuscripts under review. Reviewers should not upload or disclose unpublished manuscripts, reviewer comments, research data, or other confidential materials to AI systems when doing so could compromise confidentiality or intellectual property.
Reviewers remain personally responsible for the accuracy, fairness, confidentiality, and scholarly judgment expressed in their review.
8. AI Use by Editors
Editors may use appropriate technological tools for administrative or quality-control purposes, provided that confidentiality, fairness, editorial independence, and data protection are maintained.
AI-assisted tools must not replace editorial accountability or the independent judgment required for decisions concerning peer review, acceptance, revision, or rejection.
9. AI-Generated Images, Figures, and Multimedia
AI-generated or AI-assisted images, figures, illustrations, datasets, or multimedia content must be used transparently and responsibly.
Authors are responsible for ensuring that such materials do not violate copyright, privacy, research ethics, licensing conditions, or other applicable rights and regulations.
Where AI materially contributes to the creation or modification of visual materials, authors should disclose that use and provide sufficient information for readers and editors to understand the nature of the contribution.
10. AI and References
Authors must verify every reference generated or suggested by an AI system. AI tools may generate inaccurate, incomplete, or nonexistent bibliographic information.
Authors are responsible for ensuring that citations accurately represent the cited sources and that all references included in the manuscript are genuine, relevant, and appropriately cited.
11. AI and Plagiarism
The use of AI does not exempt authors from the journal's plagiarism and originality requirements.
AI-assisted writing must be reviewed for originality, attribution, factual accuracy, and compliance with the journal's Plagiarism Policy.
Similarity screening is an editorial screening measure and does not by itself establish whether plagiarism has occurred. Editorial assessment and author clarification may be required when concerns arise.
12. Editorial Procedure for AI-Related Concerns
- Identification: The editorial team may identify concerns regarding undisclosed, inappropriate, or potentially misleading AI use.
- Initial Assessment: The editor assesses the concern in the context of the manuscript, journal policy, and available evidence.
- Author Clarification: The authors may be asked to explain how AI tools were used and to provide relevant disclosure or documentation.
- Editorial Evaluation: The editor evaluates whether the use of AI has affected originality, accuracy, authorship, confidentiality, research integrity, or the reliability of the manuscript.
- Action: Depending on the circumstances, the journal may request correction, revision, additional disclosure, further review, or take other appropriate editorial action.
- Post-Publication Action: If a significant AI-related integrity issue is identified after publication, the journal may consider a correction, expression of concern, retraction, or other appropriate action in accordance with its publication ethics procedures.
13. Human Accountability
The use of AI-assisted technologies does not transfer responsibility from the authors, reviewers, editors, or publisher to an AI system.
Human participants in the publication process remain accountable for their decisions, statements, ethical conduct, and compliance with applicable journal policies.
14. Transparency and Editorial Discretion
JUPAUD encourages transparent disclosure of material AI assistance while recognizing that the appropriate disclosure may depend on the nature and extent of AI use.
The editorial team may request additional information where necessary to evaluate the integrity, originality, accuracy, or ethical compliance of a submission.
15. Policy Compliance
All authors, editors, reviewers, and other participants in the publication process are expected to comply with this AI Ethics & Procedure policy, the journal's Publication Ethics, Plagiarism Policy, Peer Review Policy, Copyright and Licensing Policy, and other applicable journal policies.
Where AI-related conduct raises concerns about publication misconduct, the journal may apply its established procedures for investigating and addressing allegations of misconduct.
Publication Ethics Framework
JUPAUD's editorial and publication practices are guided by the core principles and best practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and internationally recognized principles of transparency and best practice in scholarly publishing.
Authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher share responsibility for protecting the integrity of the scholarly record.
